Supportive Images & Logics
This work features a reconfigured standard art history text, Gardner's Art Through the Ages, (5th ed.), with a reproduction of Diego Velazquez's Las Meninas protruding from the side. The grayscale versions of well known Impressionist landscapes, embedded in the adjacent gallery wall and arranged in various formats, coincide with the placement of the figures from Las Meninas. The works have been manipulated so that viewers can line up the images with the cut outs of faces featured in the sculpture, and by adjusting and focusing one's eyes on the differing depths of field, the paintings morph into the faces of the individuals in Las Meninas.
